Term Project
Autumn 2002
Objectives of term project:
General description of the term project:
The project will be done by planning teams. Each team should have two to four students with different backgrounds and experiences. All the members in a team should be in the same laboratory section. If they are not, the team is responsible to maintain require communication and meeting times necessary to complete the project. Together the team will develop 5 intermediate reports that will build to a final report. A draft final report will presented for review. An oral report will be presented to the class. A final report will be turned in place of a final exam.
As a team, identify a moderate size building that you know someone needs or would like. If you can not find such a building, make up a building project. The building can be either agricultural, small commercial, or residential. Hopefully, you can identify someone who can assist in answering the planning questions. The course instructors or other faculty members are acceptable. With this client, develop a detailed description of the project based on a strategic planning and mission statement. From this detailed description, develop a floor plan to meet the needs of the client. Using information about site planning, develop a site layout for the project. From general construction handbooks, which must be referenced in the final report; develop a construction schedule and bid for the project.
Some laboratory time will be allocated to the project on most days. Interim reports will be required to assist in keeping on the correct track. Each member of the team is expected to cooperate fully in the project based on his or her talents. At the end of the project, each member of the team will be asked to assign points for participation to every member of the team. The range for the point value is 1 to 50. If you felt that everyone contributed equally, then you could give everyone 50 points. If one member did very little, the member would be fewer points. The average of these points will be used for the student evaluation of team members part of the project total points, i.e. each member may not receive the same points for the project.
Expectations for final project report:

Ø 5 intermediate reports worth 25 points each 125
Ø Draft project report 75
Ø Oral report 100
