RESEARCH

In Progress:

Empirical derivation of work Guidelines for Youth in Agriculture, September 1998 to present

Evaluating Ohio’s tractor Certification Program: Traditional and Novel Approaches, September 1997 to present.

      Completed:

Study of lighting and marking of Amish Buggies .  Funded through release time, 1995-97

Study of lighting and marking alternatives for tractors and farm machinery used on U.S. highways.  Funded by the Equipment Manufacturers Institute. 1991-96

Study of 1000 Ohio farmers to determine the type of agricultural vehicle use on Ohio highways, the extent and nature of past accidents and near miss accidents, and the farmers perception of agricultural highway safety program needs and delivery methods. Funded by the Ohio Department of Highway Safety.

West Virginia Farm Accident Survey, 1989. Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, this study was conducted to determine the extent and types of farm accidents occurring on West Virginia farms. Results were presented at the 1989 summer meeting of the National Institute for Farm Safety.

Operation of Farm Vehicles on West Virginia Public Highways:  Legal Obligations and Safety Considerations. (with M. L. Bean and J. M. McDonald) 1986.

Determination of Safety Curriculum Needs and Instructional Methods for the Sawmilling Industry in West Virginia. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, 1982.

A Plan for Reduction of Injuries and Health Hazards in the Logging Industry of West Virginia, 1980-81.  This project was part of an OSHA-funded planning grant which led to the implementation of safety programs in the primary forest industries in West Virginia.  Funded for $62,955 in FY-80, the research stage surveyed, through random sample, the lumber and logging employers and employees to determine specific safety and health training needs.  The analyzed data provided a strong base on which safety programming was conducted.  As a result of the research conducted educational programs were developed and funded ($407,061) through 1986.

West Virginia Farm Accident Survey, 1979.  Developed in cooperation with the National Safety Council, several hundred volunteer interviewers collected accident data over a twelve-month period.  Data were statistically analyzed to help formulate accident prevention programs best suited to West Virginia.

Crime on Farms in West Virginia, 1978-1979.  A pilot effort to determine the extent and types of criminal incidents occurring on West Virginia farms, and measures taken by farm residents to prevent losses due to criminal activities.
