Last month, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) announced the recipients of its annual awards program, celebrating the trailblazers driving progress within the STEM community and championing the advancement of women in engineering. The 2024 SWE awards honorees include collegiate students and professionals from leading companies, organizations, and academic institutions around the world.

Ohio State University Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) food engineering major Ally Lewis was one of the recipients of the Rising Collegiate Star Award. This award honors an undergraduate SWE collegiate member with less than two years of SWE collegiate involvement that has made an outstanding contribution to SWE, other engineering organizations, the community, and their campus.

"It doesn't feel real, considering the fact that just two years ago I was watching seniors in OSU SWE obtain awards on a National level - I remember feeling so proud and so impressed by those female engineers, and I made it my goal to be as much like them as possible," said Lewis. "As such, I feel so honored and could not be more grateful to have a collegiate section that has supported my growth so deeply these past two years."

On campus, Lewis serves at the vice president of the Society of Women Engineers - The Ohio State University chapter. She is also a member of the Stamps Eminence Scholars Program and is a College of Engineering ambassador. Furthermore, she conducts undergraduate research in Dr. Gonul Kaletunc's Food Engineering Lab.

Outside of the classroom, Lewis worked an Engineering Co-Op with Cargill from spring 2023 to summer 2024. This summer, she will work as a Product Development R&D Intern with Nestle in Solon, Ohio.

“We received well over a thousand submissions, and this group of awardees showed us how they embody the mission of SWE and inspire others along the way across the global landscape," said Karen Roth, FY25 SWE president. "These truly are some of the best engineers and scientists in the world."

This year’s award recipients will be recognized at WE24, the world’s largest conference and career fair for women engineers and technologists on Oct. 24-26 in Chicago.
