Senior Spotlight: Q & A with Brock Barbey

Feb. 6, 2025
CSM Senior Brock Barbey

The Construction Systems Management (CSM) program within the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) at The Ohio State University provides students with several opportunities to advance during their time in college and prepare them to be ahead of the game once they graduate.

We sat down with CSM senior Brock Barbey to learn about his experience in the program and plans for after graduation.

  1. Where are you from and what is your major and class year?

I am from Millersburg Ohio. I am a Senior Construction Systems Management Major

  1. What interested you in your current major, and how did you find FABE?

I have always loved building and had a couple years of experience in the residential home remodel business and decided I wanted more education and knowledge. I started out by getting me associates degree at the Wooster Campus of Ohio State, and then transferred to main campus.

  1. What do you like about our department/your major?

I like my major for the professors that he department hires. They are all highly knowledgeable individuals that deeply want to share their knowledge with the students.

  1. Are there any clubs, organizations, or extracurricular activities you are involved in?

While not in college, I am an Eagle Scout and was involved with scouting for over 10 years participating in community service as well as learning and teaching outdoor skills.

  1. Have you worked on any projects, research, or internships that you’re particularly proud of?

I worked with Barton Malow of Columbus this summer. We renovated the interior of the Cesar Chavez Elementary school. This was a fulfilling project because it took an older school and made it into a beautiful space for the kids. My team also organized a bookbag and supply drive for the kids and donated the bags full of supplies to the kids at the beginning of the school year.

  1. Is there a course or professor/lecturer in FABE that has stood out to you?

Philip Sutton stands out to me because of his breath of knowledge and his desire to know everyone. I developed a friendship with Phil over the many classes I have taken with him and we often share life stories and onions with each other. Phil’s desire to always want to teach the students as best he can is admirable and I really appreciate him.

  1. What advice would you have for underclassmen in your discipline?

Do not come out of this degree expecting to know everything. Humble yourself now and come into the workplace willing to learn everything you can. Share your knowledge when it is necessary and learn as much as you can in your jobs and internships.

  1. What are your plans for after graduation?

I plan to work at Barton Malow as an Assistant Superintendent.

  1. Do you feel like this department has prepared you for post-grad? How so?

I believe this degree has given me a head start into my career. My degree has given me a background in many different areas, as well as the connections to be able get a job almost anywhere.
