Wastewater Treatment in Rural China (Dr. Karen Mancl)
More than 50% of the Chinese population live in the countryside. Beginning in 2006, special attention was directed to improving the living environment in Chinese villages. Environmental infrastructure is an important part of the development of the "New Countryside". Dr. Mancl is collaborating with the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Jinan to develop new, low cost ways to treat wastewater. The first sand bioreactor treatment plant was constructed in 2010 in southern Shandong Province.
