FABE team named finalist for $2M Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE

An Ohio State University pH sensor originally designed to be used in the food industry could help turn the tide on the declining health of the globe’s oceans.

A team led by Sudhir Sastry entered the sensor into the Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE competition. Sastry is a professor of food engineering and a scientist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.

Each year, the ASC competition is centered on a real life construction project and judged by a panel of industry professionals.  They include Owners, Developers, Construction Managers and Contractors. Upon arrival to Chicago, the teams will be given the “project” and will be expected to create an estimate, project management plan, and safety plan in a given time period. The teams will also be required to present their findings to a team of judges.  This year’s schedule is as follows:

FABE study shows fish from Lake Erie are safe to eat, despite algae bloom

Despite toxic algae blooms, fish from Lake Erie are safe to eat, according to early results of a study from The Ohio State University. Researchers have finished one year of the study into how harmful algae affects walleye, yellow perch and white perch, said Jay Martin, professor of ecological engineering at OSU’s department of food, agricultural and biological engineering.
