Standing guard for an entire crop season, a red flag flew patiently above a corn canopy in all weathers, marking the location of a record-breaker. The Ohio State University (OSU) banner stood sentinel over a plant named Terra Byte which represented the most agricultural data gathered in farming history for a single corn plant across an entire growing season.

Over the last year, Trey Colley, a graduate student studying precision agriculture at The Ohio State University, worked to gather the most data ever collected for a single corn plant. Now that the growing season has transitioned to harvest, Colley has been amazed at the amount of data that has accumulated from his corn plant.

As the growing season has progressed, aerial imagery has been part of the world record setting data-collection efforts for Terra, a single corn plant in a Farm Science Review field. The bird’s eye view of the field through the 2017 growing season has been provided by AirScout.

The Ohio State Precision Ag team continues to tally up megabytes as the effort to gather a world record setting amount of data for a single corn plant (named Terra Byte). The project is also seeking out which data is most valuable for making agronomic decisions.
