DamSafe™ - a device to deproteinize dental dams

DamSafe™ - a device to deproteinize dental dams used in American Dentistry (Dr. Cornish)

We tested a wide range of products used in dental offices and found that many latex dental dams contain very high levels of extractable protein.  The levels are significantly above the levels known to sensitize many people with life-threatening Type I latex allergy.   It is impossible to tell by looking at a dental dam if it has high or low protein, and the tests are long and complex.  With the help of two FABE Capstone Teams we have developed a small device for the dental office which can reduce protein levels to non-sensitizing levels in a few minutes, while the patient is being prepared for their dental procedure. We are optimizing the prototype so that a simple version can be reproduced and marketed.
